# Shuffle Seed

### Why draw your own words

When a hardware wallet generates your seed phrase, you are trusting its random number generator and its firmware. You cannot see either of them. With Shuffle Seed the randomness comes out of your own hands, in front of you, in plain BIP39 words you can read and check.

Seedfan puts the entropy of a blind draw at “approximately 253 bits of physical entropy”, against roughly 258 bits for 100 dice rolls. The difference does not matter. What matters is that the whole process stays visible, and that you end up holding words instead of a hundred numbers you have to trust a device to convert correctly.

### How it works

- **Verify.** Check the six alphabetized sheets against the official BIP39 word list on GitHub. Don’t trust, verify.
- **Push out the words.** All 2048 chips come out of the six carton sheets.
- **Shuffle.** Put all 2048 word chips into a bag or a hat and shuffle them thoroughly.
- **Draw blind.** Draw 11 words for a 12-word seed phrase, or 23 words for a 24-word seed phrase, one by one. Return each chip to the bag before the next draw. Duplicates are valid.
- **Let your device calculate the checksum word.** The final word cannot be drawn. Your hardware wallet or signing device works it out. A SeedSigner does this under Tools, “Calc 12th/24th word”.
- **Back it up properly.** Never store a seed phrase digitally. Engrave it on steel and put it somewhere safe.

### Do this in private

Generate your seed away from cameras, windows and other people. Never photograph it, and never type it into an internet-connected computer or phone. The paper chips are only as private as the room you draw them in.
